But let me not stand any longer between you and this latest batch of inane profundities, or profound inanities, or profanities or whatever. (All quotes are from Monday’s press conference.)
• This is — but war is not a time of joy. These aren’t joyous times.
• You know, nobody likes to see innocent people die. (Not even Osama, O great and glorious leader? Or is it that in your bubble these days no one is allowed to utter his name, so that he doesn’t really exist in your psyche any more?)
• This was a huge storm. (Yup, Katrina.)
• An international force requires international commitment.
• We reject the killing of innocents to achieve a radical and violent agenda. (We do support it for achieving other ends, though, right?)
• If you think problems are tough now, imagine what it would be like if the United States leaves before this government has a chance to defend herself, govern herself, and listen to the — and answer to the will of the people. (I’m trying to imagine what it would be like for the Maliki government to govern itself. But I must say, it’s not working for me.)
• And what’s very interesting about the violence in Lebanon and the violence in Iraq and the violence in Gaza is this: These are all groups of terrorists who are trying to stop the advance of democracy. (The acts of violence in Lebanon and in Gaza are being committed by Israel, right? Finally! An American President who is willing to buck the Jewish lobby, and call a spade a spade.)
• Chaos in Iraq would be very unsettling in the region.
