Stranger Than Fiction

Even in the unreal world of television entertainment, can this really be true?

Star Jones Reynolds was booted from “The View” Wednesday, one day after surprising ABC and Barbara Walters by saying on the air that she wouldn’t be returning to the daytime talk show in the fall.
[…]
ABC had decided against renewing Reynolds’ contract months ago and the show was planning to let Reynolds announce it later this week, according to Walters. Reynolds could say whatever she wanted to about why she was leaving, “and we would back her up,” the longtime ABC newswoman said.

Instead, Walters said she felt blindsided when Reynolds broke the news Tuesday, then was quoted in People magazine as saying she felt like she was fired.
[…]
Walters didn’t discuss on the air why Reynolds, an original cast member who’s been on the show for nine years, wasn’t being asked back. She said in an interview Tuesday that research showed audience members were turned off by Reynolds’ dramatic weight loss and glitzy wedding to banker Al Reynolds in 2004.

She was fired right away instead of being allowed to serve out her time because she made the announcement on Tuesday instead of Thursday or Friday? (It couldn’t have been what she said, right, since she could say whatever she wanted and they would back her up.)

And they had to let her go because she lost so much weight? Someone should really take Barbara Walters aside and explain to her the virtues of “No comment”. Funny, isn’t it, how dramatic weight loss worked out just fine for Oprah, but cost Star her job? As long as Barbara Walters is in the commenting business, I would love to see her explain that.

I’m surprised she was there for 9 years, to begin with. I suppose I’m glad, coz those SNL sketches of The View were damned funny and they wouldn’t have been the same without a Star to poke fun at.

THERE WAS AN INDICATION WHEN BW SPOKE THE NEXT DAY, THAT STARR’S CONSISTENT UNWILLINGNESS TO DISCUSS HER WEIGHT LOSS, WHICH AMOUNTED TO DENYING THAT SHE HAD BYPASS SURGERY. ALSO, MANY AUDIENCE MEMBERS LIKE MYSELF WERE TURNED OFF BY HER GIVING TOO MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT HER WEDDING, WHICH REPORTEDLY TURNED INTO A CIRCUS SINCE SHE RECEIVED MANY COMMERCIAL FREEBIES, AND WAS OBLIGED TO RECOGNIZE ALL OF THEM EITHER ON THE AIR OR ONLINE. SHE WAS APPARENTLY NOTIFIED OF HER CONTRACT NOT BEING RENEWED BEFORE THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT ROSIE WOULD BE JOINING THE SHOW. STAR “FELT” LIKE SHE WAS FIRED? WELL, HELLO! SHE WAS, BUT ABC HAD BEEN WILLING TO KEEP IT SECRET UNTIL HER UNEXPECTED OUTBURST. I’M GLAD SHE’S GONE. OBVIOUSLY SHE IS HOPILESSLY IN LOVE WITH HERSELF. NOW SHE CAN JUST GO SOMEWHERE AND CELEBRATE THAT. (SORRY, I DIDN’T MEAN TO SHOUT…)
