Confused

I sure as heck don’t want to commit treason, but I’m confused out of my mind. After the U.S. has been eliminated, will President Bush, Vice President Cheney and Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Pat Roberts sic their dogs on me if I root for France in the World Cup? (Or did I manage to get that wrong? Is Pat Roberts one of the dogs?)

On the one hand, France turned into an enemy right after 9/11, when they made it clear they weren’t with us, and were therefore solidly in the camp of Osama bin Laden.

On the other hand, by the impeccable logic of the true patriots in Congress, the French team must now be regarded as the Freedom team. Just as it was our patriotic duty to consume vast quantities of Freedom fries, is it not my patriotic duty to root for the Freedom team now that the team of the free and team of the brave is out of the Cup?

The government should really have a Dear Abby office to field such questions of political etiquette. So difficult, without help, to know what is right. And next thing you know, your name is on the no-fly lists.

never mind your patriotic duty, it is your 1115 duty to root for france.

In the absence of guidance from my government, maybe I will.

Then there’s also E.M. Forster’s famous remark: “If I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country.”

Matt, I always begin my serious cheering campaigns by putting on my soothsayer costume and pulling out my crystal ball.

And here’s what the ball revealed. France can win it all, but not without your help. And all you have to do is desist from responding to anything JimC says, for the duration of the Cup. That’s it.

So much hate, so little time…I’m working on how to make comments and say what I want without explicitly saying it while being able to defend what I say by insisting I didn’t say what you think I said…trying to learn the way’s of the force….
