A Concise History Of WMD Pretenses

by sarabeth at 8:00 am on May 10th, 2006 in Iraq War

(with grateful thanks to Marc)

There was the original WMD pretense, the one by Saddam. When he pretended to have them.

Then there was the later pretense by Saddam, when he pretended to move them.

How about the original pretense by us, before the war? When we pretended he had them (and had them trained on us)?

And let’s not forget the pretense at the time of the invasion, when our soldiers were decked out in full chemical weapon protective suits as we pretended he was now going to use them on us.

Not to mention the pretense when we were looking for them, when we pretended we knew where they were.

And then there was the classic moment when we pretended to find them.

Paling in comparison, the classic comedy sketch when Bush pretended to hunt for them under tables at last year’s White House Press Correspondents dinner.

Ending with a whimper, there was the latest pretense by Rumsfeld, when he pretended he had never pretended he knew where they were.

Already you have started out disingenuous. We know that for a fact Saddam had them, he used them on the Kurds.

Then there was the later pretense by Saddam, when he pretended to move them.

Again, disingenuous. “pretend”? You pretend to seek the truth but in fact reject anything other than a conclusion that Bush lied.

And let’s not forget the pretense at the time of the invasion, when our soldiers were decked out in full chemical weapon protective suits as we pretended he was now going to use them on us.

Ignoring the statements of Gen Franks, you assume to know for a fact that all these things were lies and therefore requires a grand scheme production to give the appearance of being threatened by these weapons. Sure, that’s plausible I guess, only if you are a conspiracy nut job.

The fact is, we, you, me and everyone else aren’t 100% correct about anything concerning the WMDs. They were there at one time, Saddam used them. There were 4 years prior to the beginning of the war where he had plenty of time to either destroy them or hide them. Considering his defiance to UN and the world, it is unlikely he would destroy his power so willingly.

Which seems more likely to be the truth, Saddam gave up his weapons and programs to be submissive to the US and the UN? Or he bought himself time and allies to conceal his efforts and hide the inventory?

I understand your desire to hate Bush and anything he does but to ignore the character and reality of Saddam and his historical lust for power, it is a stunning display of suspension of reason to conclude that Saddam was being compliant and willing partner to dismantle his weapons and programs and at the same time conclude that Bush and the US government fabricated the entire WMD case.

Short of an admission of guilt or solid documented proof, i.e. secret documents that clearly show Bush ordered a fabrication beyond any doubt, I cannot subscribe to the thinking that Saddam was an innocent victim of the evil US government…

We all know Bushie lied about the WMD. He kille 3000 americans on 9/11, why would he have any qualms about pretending Sadam had WMD’s.
