Dear Mr. Rumsfeld,
Somebody who thinks of himself as a great man once said:
As you know, you go to war with the Army you have. They’re not the Army you might want or wish to have at a later time.
Well, sir, it may be true that you go to war with the Defense Secretary you have. And he’s not necessarily the Defense Secretary you might want or wish to have at a later time.
But when you do realize that you want or wish or desperately need to have a different Defense Secretary, guess what? Unlike a whole Army, a Defense Secretary is easily replaced. And maybe, just maybe, it makes sense to replace the Defense Secretary when it becomes overwhelmingly clear that he’s part of the problem, and will never ever be part of the solution?
You think of yourself as a great man, huh? Well, I have news for you: great men know when their time has come, and also when their time has gone.
Maybe you’re not so great, after all?
Sincerely,
Sarabeth
