Andy Card Is Dead! Long Live Josh Bolten!
by sarabeth at 6:00 am on April 4th, 2006 in John Snow, Podium SpinLooks like Josh Bolten is going to fit right in at the top levels of the White House. The first thing he’s setting out to do is to shoot a few messengers.
Presidential press secretary Scott McClellan and Treasury Secretary John Snow could be next in a shake-up in the Bush administration, according to White House and GOP sources.
The possible departure of both men could be among “several senior-level staff” announcements to come within the next couple of weeks, said former White House staff members, GOP strategists and administration officials.
WaPo elaborates on the Snow job:
The Bush administration wants a more compelling figure than Snow to lead its effort to highlight the economy’s strength in the hope of bolstering Republican chances in November’s congressional elections, the sources said.
I really wasn’t aware that this is what the Treasury Secretary’s job is: not to manage the economy, but to highlight its strength. Why the heck are they looking on Wall Street then? Madison Avenue is where they should focus their search efforts.
Now, I’ve certainly had my share of fun at Scotty’s expense, but let’s be fair to the guy. The major problem Scotty has faced is the material they give him, the situations they put him into.
Given that material and those situations, Scotty’s done as well as anyone who’s willing to lie for a living could be expected to. To fire him is just plain wrong. Which is probably the nail in his coffin right there, if you think about it. The ones who get away with it are the ones whom it would be just plain wrong to leave in their jobs. And the ones who get medals, they are the ones where it would be unconscionable to do anything other than fire them immediately.
