Just an Onlooker?
by sarabeth at 6:00 am on March 29th, 2006 in Bush Man Date, GeneralIs it just me, or is George Bush largely irrelevant in the immigration reform debate? Seems to me that he’s just kind of standing on the sidelines, just watching pretty much, as people like Bill Frist try to hijack the debate to make political capital out of it, and saner heads try to craft some meaningful legislation. From time to time, he rouses himself to sing out another chorus of “Remember, I have this guest worker plan!”, but he doesn’t really seem to have his heart in it. He doesn’t seem to believe himself that anyone is paying much attention. And he doesn’t seem to care very much, either. As if he’s resigned to immigration reform being just a spectator sport for him at this point.
I do wonder what he’s thinking inside as he watches it all unfold. Is it just “Will Laura let me have ice-cream after dinner today?” Or is it: “Whose bleeping idea was it to have this issue come up before Congress now? Whose bleeping idea was it that this would allow the Republican party to score points over the Democrats? Who the bleeping hell does Frist think he is, anyway? Is it bleeping possible for my bleeping poll numbers to go bleeping lower? I sure as hell hope I’m not about to find out. But the heck with all that. Will Laura let me have ice-cream after dinner today?”
