So You Say

“We can expect the coming days will be intense. Iraq remains a serious situation, but I’m optimistic, because the Iraqi people have spoken” their desire for democracy through elections, he said.
I’m curious to know how voting in one, maybe two elections establishes democracy as a stronger force than wanting to wipe out your long-time social and/or religious enemies. Especially when so many Iraqis seemed to vote only to make sure their own side had enough political power to stand up to (or run right over) the other.
Just because someone got a purple finger doesn’t mean he would hesitate to battle or kill his countrymen. Democracy is a form of government, not some kind of happy ray that will make every Iraqi drop their guns, join hands, and sing “Kumbaya”.
