Here, here, Mark. Though I'm cautiously optimistic that the tide is turning. Dean and Reid seem to have breathed new life into the party. November will show if they've really learned anything.

As a professional writer, I pay close attention to how people use words to convey their message. It's amazing how one little turn of phrase here or there can completely alter the preception of that message.

If anyone wants to know why the right has been so successful as of late, all he or she has to do is look at the deft use of language.

The left, on the other hand, has failed miserably at getting their point across using concise, focus-group-tested catch phrases. Granted, using a page out of the GOP marketing plan may seem repulsive to some, but the fact is it works, especially when one considers the short attention spans of a majority of the American public.

Part of that is because we on the left abhor the notion of talking points—instead, we take pride in individuality and competing ideas. The other part is failed leadership at the top of the DNC, and an unwillingness adapt to new media (the blogosphere was primarily right leaning up until a few years ago).

Until progressives find a way to choose their words more carefully, develop a plan to get that message across easily, and just suck it up and realize that's the only way to get this country going in the right direction, we'll continue down the path to ruin.
