Donald Rumsfeld in Adelaide, Australia (11/18/05):

“Every time there is an opportunity for some person who has been captured to get to the press, or for his lawyer to get to the press, they frequently allege mistreatment. You are going to continue to hear that, but the fact of the matter is, talking to … people that have been there at Guantanamo Bay, I think you will find uniformly that they have high compliments for the manner in which the facility there is being handled.”

The guy is slipping. I don’t think he was supposed to let on that we have programs in place to keep the lawyers of Guantanamo detainees from being able to speak to the press.

And it is certainly helpful for Rummy to clarify that no mistreatment of detainees takes place in plain sight of visitors to Guantanamo, especially the “literally hundreds of journalists, …hundreds of members of the US House and Senate, …the International Committee of the Red Cross” who have been there.
