When John Kerry Did It…

…it was called “flip-flopping.” When Arnold Schwarzenegger does it, it’s called…:

With an eye toward the Nov. 8 special election, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger delighted consumer advocates when he signed bills on Friday that put tough restrictions on two industries that have helped make him a multimillionaire: video games and dietary supplements.

Conflicts of interest have been a hallmark of Schwarzenegger’s time in office, and with his own approval ratings in the toilet and his ballot propositions in bad shape, he finally does what he should have done a year ago.

“To the extent he can steer clear of these worries, he benefits to put voters’ fears away,” [Field Poll director Mark] DiCamillo said. “He also shows a bit of independence that we haven’t seen in the past.”

Schwarzenegger is getting credit for eliminating a long-running ethics problem that until now he has denied even exists. This type of thinking is becoming all too common with both Schwarzenegger and the President: the few times they’ve actually done the right thing they’ve been showered with compliments more suited to politicians who have risked their standing by taking courageous stands.
