Maybe “Disgusting” Means Something Different to Me

Bitches.

Laura Bush seems to think it applies to criticism:

First lady Laura Bush on Thursday denounced critics who say race played a role in the federal government’s slow response to victims of Hurricane Katrina, calling the accusations “disgusting.”

Silly me, I thought it covered racist garbage from the shriveled whore who birthed the current President:

“Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we’re going to move to Houston.”

“What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

“And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this–this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them.”

you know, recently someone re-told me the story about the time former president bush was in a grocery store and was surprised by the “scanner” thinking that it was a new and interesting invention. i had heard it before, and in fact, it sounds a bit like an urban myth, but it does illustrate the point that the people running the country know nothing about my life and certainly nothing about the people who live near or below the poverty line.

i just found out that one of my former bosses, with whom it was particularly difficult to negotiate salary, made close to 150,000 while the organization we were working for was paying me less and 40,000. and just like i would not like him making decisions for me about ANYTHING (should i pay for cable or the new york times because i certainly can’t afford both? should i join a gym or try to find a way to work out for free? should i set my thermostat at 55 and spend all winter under blankets or pay the substantial difference to set it to 70?) because in comparison he doesn’t have to make choices, he gets it all, i don’t understand how the entire federal government can be so removed from the public it is trusted to govern.

and before you blast me for my superficial examples of “tough” choices, just know that that is exactly my point. it is all relative. no, i’ve never chosen between medicine and food, but i think i can appreciate that dilemma a lot better than bush and his mommy can.

While I agree with the substance of your post, Jamie, let me correct the record on the grocery scanner thing:

Then-President Bush (41) had a photo op at a grocery industry convention. At that convention, he charmed some grocery folks by checking out their new technologies, one of which was a fancy-pants scanner that wasn’t yet in stores. So it WAS new to him, he DID act incredulous… but it was totally innocent and legitimate.

Of course, this is the same man who didn’t know how much a gallon of milk cost.

(Of course, I don’t, either.. when I buy it at the coop it costs a lot more than when I buy it at Target.)

Thanks Victoria, you beat me to it.

    Jamie:

    http://www.faireconomy.org/press/2005/EE2005_pr.html

The ratio of average CEO pay (now $11.8 million) to worker pay (now $27,460) spiked up from 301-to-1 in 2003 to 431-to-1 in 2004.

If the minimum wage had risen as fast as CEO pay since 1990, the lowest paid workers in the US would be earning $23.03 an hour today, not $5.15 an hour.

Sure, Babs is vile like Ann Coulter is vile. I have no argument with that. But do you think maybe “whore” is a little, I dunno, strong? Inaccurate?

And I am not convinced the statement is inherently racist either. It is certainly elitist, callous and shows just how indifferent she and her brood are to non-millionaires.

I am sure she doesn’t love the darkies, but I don’t find the statement in an of itself racist.

  5. Yeah, seriously, there are a lot of whores out there with big, compassionate hearts. Barbara Bush is a cunt. Get it right.

  6. matt says:

“What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas.”

Scary? Are people generally more scared of poor people or African Americans?

And even granting that maybe the bitch wasn’t first thinking of race, race and class are hopelessly intertwined. The images everyone saw (especially this one: http://differentkitchen.blogspot.com/2005/09/when-levee-breaks.html ) were of poor black people on their roofs. Could I prove in court that she’s racist? Maybe not, but the preponderance of evidence is on my side.

And when someone crosses the line like that, I have little problem throwing mud. The fact that there has been no official condemnation from the WH speaks volumes.

  7. screwtape says:

I am not defending her. But let’s not get all crazy here.

First of all, she is a hundred years old. Old people say nutty things. The do it because they are soft in the head and they come from a different world than we do. When she was my age, civil rights was just starting.

Don’t you have a grandfather or uncle around her age? Doesn’t he say something ridiculous like that at thanksgiving? Don’t you kind of just ignore it because he is so fricken old and it’s pointless to argue with him? Or do you call him a whore and demand your father to condemn his statement? It’d be funny if you called him a “whore”. That cracks me up.

Secondly, there is some truth to what she said. 250,000 refugees with absolutely nothing is a scary proposition. For Houston that is an increase of 13%. Growing a community that much over 10 years is huge. To add that many people over night is hard to imagine. It is going to be a strain on the schools, the job market, housing, law enforcement and every other aspect of the community. How would you feel if 100,000 of the poorest people showed up today in San Francisco? Perhaps you would feel a little intimidated? Maybe you would find it a little scary?

Granted, president cockmonkey should keep her away from microphones and he should at least say something to indicate he does not share the views of his batty old lady. That is what he would do if he were a decent person or a competent politician. But he is neither.

So, in conclusion, Barbara Bush is a wicked old hag, but to get all bent out of shape over anything she says is wasted outrage. I think you are reading more into what she said than what is there. She is old and crazy. Take it with a grain of salt. Let’s stay focused on people who matter, like her idiot sons.

I have a 94-yr-old grandfather who says things he shouldn’t. They don’t allow him on NPR. The fact that the White House refused to address direct questions about whether they agree with her remarks is tantamount to them saying it themselves.

Should it be scarier for Barbara Bush in her gated community with lifetime Secret Service protection or the people sleeping on the floor of the Astrodome? Scarier for a woman on a government pension with a personal fortune or for those who lost everything?

    Barbara Bush 2002: http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/barbara.asp

“I watch none. He [former President Bush] sits and listens and I read books, because I know perfectly well that, don’t take offense, that 90 percent of what I hear on television is supposition, when we’re talking about the news. And he’s not, not as understanding of my pettiness about that. But why should we hear about body bags, and deaths, and how many, what day it’s gonna happen, and how many this or what do you suppose? Or, I mean, it’s, it’s not relevant. So, why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that? And watch him suffer.”

  9. screwtape says:

I cannot disagree with that. I am not so sure what she thinks is so beautiful about her mind. She is the devil.
