From Reuters 5/17/05:

The White House called on Newsweek magazine on Tuesday to help repair damage to the U.S. image in the Muslim world from its false report that American interrogators at Guantanamo Bay desecrated the Koran.

Newsweek retracted the report on Monday, saying it could not substantiate a May 9 article contending that an internal military investigation had uncovered Koran abuse. The report said interrogators at the U.S. military prison in Cuba had flushed at least one copy of the Muslim holy book down a toilet to try to make detainees talk.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan called the retraction a good first step, but said the newsweekly should “help repair the damage that has been done, particularly in the region,” by explaining “what happened and why they got it wrong.” He offered few specifics.

Here you go, Scottie. Don’t forget to thank us.
