Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds (R-NY): STFU!
by matt at 6:15 am on November 22nd, 2004 in STFU!
Maybe it’s not quite fair to use the awesome power of the STFU! against a back-bench Republican congressman like Thomas M. Reynolds (R-NY). But with his comments regarding the recent increase in the federal debt limit and its effect on citizens, he walked right into the line of fire.
During debate on the bill to raise the debt limit to avoid defaulting on payments, Reynolds:
…argued that the debt limit was a function of “past decisions made by previous administrations and Congresses over decades.”
Instead of launching into a long explanation of how this just isn’t true, I’ll give you this graph to enjoy:

Surely he wasn’t blaming the dearly departed Gipper or the man who spawned the current President…
But Reynolds wasn’t finished, not even close:
“We must fulfill our obligations to the American people, to our children, men and women of the armed services and our seniors.”
Presumably he meant obligations like cutting Veterans Administration medical benefits after sending hundreds of thousands of troops to fight in an unnecessary war, passing a bloated and counterproductive Medicare plan for our seniors (who aren’t even participating in it), all the while writing IOUs that obligate our children to pay the bills.
It’s big thinking like this that defines the modern Republican party.
So, until you can read a budget (or even a simple graph), Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds, take an economics class, and then Shut the Fuck Up!

What is the source of the graph in the Reynolds story? …thanks.
