The Term “Florida Election” Has Become An Oxymoron

Considering the 2000 debacles of hanging chads and butterfly ballots, you would think that Florida is doing everything possible to make sure the 2004 elections run smoothly.

But then up to 58,000 absentee ballots went missing. Whoops.

Up to 58,000 absentee ballots may never have reached the Broward County voters who requested them more than two weeks ago, election officials said, and state police are investigating.

Hundreds of people have called the county elections office to complain that they never got their ballots. The phone system was so overwhelmed some frustrated voters could not get through.

Interesting trivia fact: In the 2000 elections, 67% of Broward County voted for Al Gore, the highest percentage of any Florida county. Conspiracy buffs can go ahead and make what they want of that.

I guess four years wasn’t enough for the Florida elections people to get their act together. But considering that the President’s brother is still the state’s governor, maybe things are going exactly as planned.
