When is a documentary filmmaker not a documentary filmmaker? When he’s Brad Maaske of course. But in the Michael Moore age, everyone wants a piece.

Enter Maaske, third to the anti-Moore market with his WMD - The Movie. Maaske is actually a realtor who bought other people’s footage of Iraq and spun it into the movie version of the Bush administration’s talking points. Even the name of the movie is perfectly counterintuitive: WMD. He may as well have shown pictures of sand for an hour for all of the WMD that have been found since the March 2003 invasion.

But, since that wouldn’t make for a very entertaining show, he went through the trouble of buying the film and transcribing Pentagon press conference banter. He even continues the national conflation of Iraq and 9-11:

The movie includes moments of comic relief and powerful imagery from the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Just what a film about Iraq needs, running the gamut between comic relief and a completely unrelated act of terrorism.

I’m not sure if this was part of the comic relief, but I learned from his C-SPAN interview that scores of Iraqi parents are naming their sons “George Bush.” George Bush bin Bazzir al-Mohammed. Now that’s comedy.

But getting back to the reason that this stooge rises to the level of a STFU!, Maaske uses the argument that Saddam Hussein was a bad man and deserved what he got because he had rows and rows of military hardware while his people starved.

I’ll address this…um…point with pictures so I can save my words for someone a bit more worthy of them:

U.S. Poverty Statistics (note the increase under Bush)

U.S. Military Hardware

Clear enough?

Until you can figure out how to name your movie properly and how to think without administration talking points, Brad Maaske SHUT THE FUCK UP!
