Pay For Your Own Convention
by matt at 6:00 am on July 22nd, 2004 in PoliticsSince the Republican National Committee announced last year that they would be holding their election year convention in the Democratic stronghold of New York City, howls of protest have been heard accusing the RNC of capitalizing on the anniversary of 9-11 for political gains.
The Republicans have tried to deflect the criticism, but never quite this poorly:
[Republican National Convention spokesman Leonardo] Alcivar, said convention organizers chose New York because it “offered the best business deal for taxpayer dollars…”
First of all, since when does New York City offer the best business deal for anything? Consistently ranked among the most expensive cities in the world, New York City may have presented the least cost effective locations for a large convention like the RNC.
And second, what do taxpayer dollars have to do with anything? I’d be pissed if the Democratic National Convention was funded with taxpayer funds. If the RNC was, I’d probably consider starting a revolution. What is this monkey talking about?
I think the Republicans should put Mr. Alcivar on the back bench and get a professional to speak for them. At least then they would have a chance of not sounding like complete morons.
