Why is this Man Smiling?

No, I haven’t lost my sense of humor, especially when it involves politicians making fun of themselves (even when they need a speechwriter to hold the puppet strings).
But with all that is going on right now, should the President really be giving fake slideshows to a gathering of reporters?
From the Radio and Television Correspondents’ Association 60th annual dinner:
There was Bush looking under furniture in a fruitless, frustrating search. “Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere,” he said.
His slide show segued into a somber ending, showing a group of special forces troops in Afghanistan at the site where they buried a piece of the fallen World Trade Center in commemoration of the dead from Sept. 11.
This is sickening. The lack of WMD in the face of the costs (in lives and money) of the Iraq war is not something to joke about. In addition to weakening the Constitution, dividing our nation, and alienating us from the world community, the war has made us weaker. Even after Bush’s chief weapons inspector David Kay testified that there are and were no weapons, this administration still talks as if they are just around the corner. Joking about this issue is in poor taste.
And never let it be said that the President passed up an opportunity to invoke 9-11, even during what was ostensibly a self-deprecating parody. Shame must be in really short supply these days.
These days every time I hear of some non-essential little exercise that the president engages in (this slideshow, the Daytona 500, vacations to Crawford etc), it reminds me that he has just one hour for the 9-11 Commission.
I always thought you had to do your chores before you could go out and play. Shouldn’t that go double for the President?
**It’s not lost on me that all Presidents go to these types of events. The contrast is that Bush is a “War President”, and we are supposedly at war, but no one except the soldiers are acting like it. Cake, eating it too…
