Save Uncle Grambo

We love us some Uncle Grambo. But the day that we tuned in for our daily dose of pop culture and saw the list to the right, we knew something had to be done. And quick.

We look the other way when it comes to his fixation with Brit Brit, Amanda Bynes, someone called “TrachtenBestEver”, and other underage starlets.

We can even forgive the weekly Saturday Night Live coverage because it actually used to be a good show.

But we can’t stand idly by while he buys songs from the likes of Jessica Simpson, The Darkness, and especially Blink fucking 182.

As music industry veterans, (and snobs on top of that), we have made it our goal to save our Uncle. Or at least save his iPod, which surely must be contemplating suicide after the above shopping trip.

We have sent young Mark a gift certificate to the iTunes Music Store to aid in his rehabilitation. Or, if you like, think of it as an intervention use the comment section to discuss our choices and add your own! With everyone’s help, Mark can return to simply ogling Hillary Duff, instead of listening to her single. Shmears.

    MP3s Of The Week
I haven’t delivered any good music in a while. And I know we all want to Save Ferris Grambo. So here’s what’s rocking my iTunes this week: Franz Ferdinand The Scots play a sold-out Bowery Ballroom tonight. You’ll be reading…

    Wonderwall by Ryan Adams. Essential.

Also, I recently bought Nowhere by Ride. Shoe Gazers will never die!!

Has Uncle Grambo heard the “Baby One More Time” cover by Travis? If not, he should use your generosity to get himself a copy of it.

Props for the Jean Grae choice - that song’s a banger.

You should’ve, er, made those mp3s so that Uncle Grambo could’ve, er, listened to them quicker.

I’ve offered him mp3s before, but he like the Apple store in all of it’s 128kbps glory. So we went the legal way.

We’ll do another playlist soon and everyone can get their download on.

ever since the dawn of time (which was 1974, if you weren’t keeping track), i’ve been down with popular music. unabashedly so. yep, i’ve still gots my Stevie B cassingles (”Because I Love You (The Postman Song)”, yo!), i’ve gots my Juice Newton 45s (”Love’s Been A Little Bit Hard On Me”) and now I’ve gots my Blink mp3s (one of them has lead vox from Robert Smith! yes, THAT Robert Smith!!!). i’m a populist at heart, i suppose. but that being said, i really appreciate the constructive criticism and i look forward to using the iTunes gift certificate on exploring more of the music listed above (some of which I already own) … thanks a buncha buncha!

and yes, I’ve heard the Travis cover of “Baby One More Time” … shit, who do you think convinced them to cover that song in the first place? OBVS, that song is / was / will always be The Hottness.

This track list is further evidence that something in Grambo is stunted. While we all enjoy the pop culture musings of a witty manchild, I worry about what one might find in the box below the bed.

There’s a dead girl’s foot in mine, FYI.

i always thought “rave down” by swervedriver was the track. but “duress” is just as good no doubt.

I’ve seen the box under Grambo’s bed and it’s filled indie cds from bands that never even existed. He buys effin’ everything, he rocks techno untz, slowcore and tennie pop in an ipod set. Last fall I went and saw the Strokes with him one night, the next night Mrs. Gorilla went with him to see Justin Timbowurves — he’s a pop culture hoover — sucking it all up and suckin’ hard. Also, if you haven’t noticed he can appreciate things ironically from time to time all the time.
In short, which I never am, I worry about Grambo a lot, but never when it comes to music or movies. Cream always rises to the top anyway, Grambo just doesn’t wait, he goes straight for the teet and hits it hard. Rock.
PS People can buy me things too.

He does effing hate the Jurassic 5 though, and harmonizing, intellectual hip hop in general, so watch out.

Not for nutts, people, but Fountains of Wayne did a far superior cover of “Baby One More Time.” You might have to go the file-sharing route to find it, but it tops Travis.
