Jamie Myerson – The Best Musician You’ve Never Heard Of*

FREE MUSIC DOWNLOADS. READ ON.

Now that I’ve gotten everyone’s attention, I want to introduce you all to Jamie Myerson, a good friend of mine since the early 90′s, when we were both slogging through Joy Division covers in an awful high school garage band. From such pedestrian beginnings, Jamie’s music career has risen steadily. After trading his drum kit for a sampler, his early tunes became staples on such labels as Reinforced, sm:)e, Perfecto, and Ovum/Sony/Columbia (who released his debut LP, The Listen Project, in 1998). He has remixed artists such as Dido, Jewel, Lords of Acid and Duncan Sheik (which hit #1 on the dance singles chart). On top of this, he has also released two albums under the pseudonym Sky City.

Jamie’s newest material is a fusion of singer-songwriter techniques with modern technology. Guitars and vocals combine with synthesizers and drum machines to create dark pop music for adults…kind of the bastard child of Black Celebration-era Depeche Mode and the last Travis album.

Getting to the point: Jamie is currently shopping around a demo of his newest songs, and wants to get the word out. So he is offering all 10 songs as a Free Download to 1115.org readers. There is one catch, though: if you download the tracks (and I would encourage you to), please send Jamie an e-mail and tell him what you think.

*(Of course, since everyone’s musical tastes are different, there’s no way I could actually claim that Jamie is the best musician you’ve never heard of. But it did get you reading, right? So get downloading. Schnell!)

wow! a blast from the past! I loved loved LOVED his collaboration with Carol Tripp and “You’re My Life” from that album. I’m sure it’s really not indicative of what he’s doing now, but I look forward to checking this out!

why did he give up good sounding drum and bass and start making subpar housey tracey stuff? i have a bunch of his early records including (iirc) an enforcers pic disc with one of his joints on it.

tom – why are you such an ass?

I’ve never heard of Jamie Myerson?

Honestly, Drum and Bass is dead. It has been for a long time. Every artist needs to move forward and grow. And when’s the last subar housey trancey thing you heard from Jamie? I haven’t heard anything in ages. Years! Eh, I don’t know… there’s other music out there besides drum and bass. And housey trancey stuff is inherently subpar. So…

    Sincerely

Tom: Jamie’s always been a musical chameleon, so it makes sense that he didn’t stick to one exclusive genre. Even when he was making drum & bass or house, he never was part of the rave scene and never went to clubs. He never was a dj. So he never felt it necessary to pigeonhole himself into one genre. And, to be honest, other than remixes (gotta pay the bills), he hasn’t really done any dance music in years…he’s concentrated mostly on becoming a better songwriter.

i wasnt knocking the guy for what he does now, moreso for jettisoning one of the most promising record label hookups for a US producer to make stuff that really wasnt all that hot. and as for drum and bass now, you dont need to argue with me about its death. i havent bought but one new record (goldie’s “beachdrifta” in over 3 years. jaimie was making tunes at a time when jungle was exciting and great and all that other stuff. and he had tunes on reinforced, one of the greatest jungle labels of all time. i was just disappointed at the time because i thought he could have done so much more interesting stuff than he chose to do. jason: about pigeonholing, i wouldnt have necessarily cared if he had switched to do something else good. obviously i like me the house and techno musics, but the stuff he chose was pretty fluffy. i will check out his new stuff for sure though.
