Broadway Joe: Keepin’ it Real Crunk

Besides being the quarterback who guaranteed victory in Super Bowl III, Joe Namath is best known for his off-the-field antics during the glory years of the early seventies, a period of time he celebrated by sporting a Fu-Manchu mustache, parading around in full-length fur coats and shilling for underwear manufacturers.
Namath was blitzed quite a few times during his flashy football career, but never so blitzed as he was on the sidelines at Giants Stadium this past Saturday night.
In a brief interview with on-field commentator Suzy Kolber during the Jets-Patriots game, Broadway Joe was visibly impaired, slurring his words and twice espousing his desire to lock lips with his lady interlocutor.

“I want to kiss you!” Joe bellowed after being asked if the sad-sack Jets would have better luck next year. Kolber, a cool customer, laughed it off and waited for a coherent response. While Namath was just about able to piece an answer together, he was compelled once more to shout “I want to kiss you!” just before the camera cut away.
The act that Broadway Joe used to attract the bell-bottomed belles by the dozen in the seventies seems to be failing him in 2003.
